6 tricks to make working out less of a pain


We all know that, ideally, we should be working out several times a week. But as work and social obligations pile up, it’s all too easy for us to postpone our workouts, and tell ourselves that we’ll start next week. If you’ve been struggling to stick to an exercise regime, here are 6 tricks that you can use to make working out seem like less of a pain.

#1: Start small

For those of you who don’t have the willpower to exercise, the trick is to start small. If you’re feeling overwhelmed at the prospect of running a kilometre thrice a week, for instance, just aim to run for five minutes instead.

Now, you might be thinking: I can barely get round the block in five minutes, so what’s the point? Well, the goal is to make your initial goal so easy and manageable that you have no excuse to exercise. Once you’ve made it a habit, you can slowly increase your goal and built on your fitness levels.

#2: Make a regular commitment with a friend

If you have a close friend whom you can work out with, having a standing workout “date” with them can make working out a lot less painful. For instance, you can devote Friday evenings to going to spin class with your friend, then catching up over a yummy dinner together.

#3: Prep all your gear beforehand

If you’re running late in the morning, and you’ve still got to pack your workout clothes and gear before you leave the house, you might be tempted to just skip your workout altogether. Make sure you’re never caught in this situation by packing your bag the night before. If possible, bring a pair of shoes and an extra change of clothes to leave at your office. 

#4: Be flexible with your workout plans

If you’re due for a run, but it’s raining, don’t use that as an excuse to skip your workout altogether. Always have a backup plan, whether it’s going to the gym, dropping in at a yoga studio, or just doing HIIT or body weight exercises at home. 

#5: Set milestones for yourself

Most people have a long-term goal in mind when they work out. For instance, you might want to be able to run a half marathon, improve your flexibility, or lose some weight.

Now, it’s perfectly fine to aim for a larger goal, but realistically speaking, you won’t achieve this overnight. To keep yourself motivated, set smaller, more achievable milestones for yourself, and chart your progress along the way. 

#6: Get productive

If you find exercising boring or monotonous, try listening to audiobooks or podcasts while you’re working out. This way, you’re getting the best of both worlds.
